Mindful Approach to Stress Reduction

We often relieve stress with physical activity like exercise or setting aside some time for a bath, but it could be more beneficial to look a little
deeper into the impact stress has on our energy.

Stress can leave you feeling unfocused and unbalanced. Prolonged stress can really drain our energy, affecting us mentally and physically. When discussing energy, you may have heard people talking about chakras or their chakras being off-balance, and wondered ‘what are they talking about’?

What are Chakras?

The idea of Chakras comes from ancient mediation practices. The word ‘chakra’ in Sanskrit (the language of Hinduism) means ‘wheel’ or ‘disk’ and refers to spiritual energy points within the body.  These energy centers, or points, within your body are linked to nerve and organ function. The seven known chakras within the body are: Crown, Third Eye, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral, and Root.

Why do Chakras need to be balanced?

The term “balanced chakras” refers to your life energy, prana or gi (we all have different names for it). When your life energy is flowing freely, openly, and clear within the body, you feel on top of the world!  When this is happening, it is believed to stimulate your health and wellbeing. So, if this magical energy becomes blocked it can generate physical, mental, or emotional imbalances that manifest as stress, anxiety, or tiredness.

How do I know if my Chakras are not balanced?

You might just be feeling “off”, unwell, or you may just feel like nothing is going your way lately.  You may be able to correlate these feelings with the corresponding chakra that needs balancing. For example, feeling ungrounded or experiencing pains in your feet or legs could be linked to your root chakra. If it feels more complicated, you may want to see a therapist who works with energy to get a deeper understanding of what needs aligning, such as one of our reiki practitioners or a Certified Sound Practitioner.

So how can essential oils help?

We know the amazing power that essential oils can have on the body, mind and soul to achieve homeostasis and as this is occurring it can be adapted to support the chakras.  As with any aromatherapy practice, there are several ways you can work with oils, such as oil blends for your “at home” myofascial release practices, the use of oils in an oil diffuser or perhaps a pulse point roller ball, depending on the Chakra you are trying to balance.

How can sound therapy help?

Sound, music, and musical notes can be used for chakra balancing. The repetition brings the body-mind-soul complex into a meditative state where healing occurs and creates a continuous vibrational environment. Each chakra, body parts/system vibrates at a different frequency. Chakras vibrate from the lowest/deepest/slowest frequency at the root to the highest/fastest at the crown; each chakra has its own sound just like it has its own color. Visualization with the associated chakra color while using sound can deepen and amplify the healing experience. Each of your chakras are vibrating at a particular frequency and respond to different vibrations or wavelengths of light.
